Pregnant Babies Pregnant with Pregnant Babies $13.98 If nothing else, the album title’s vision of a world untroubled by fertility crises is something to take heart in, if one is not a Malthusian. Overpopulation concerns aside, Fat Worm of Error’s debut release quite literally clatters and clanks to life with “Special Bonus Thing,” with snare drums and various martial beats eventually emerging from the metal shop floor into a flowing collage of percussion. It’s actually a bit deflating to hear the episode of extreme vocal screeching and spazz guitar, but being a noise band means never having to say you’re sorry. From there, Pregnant Babies staggers from mixes of semi-chanting and guitars that sound like they were staked out over anthills and made to cry to stretches of silence, with song titles like “Let’s Fool the Meat to the Hassle Room” and “Laissez-Faire Is for the Birds” being the stock in trade. It’s nice enough if one has a fondness for this approach, but at the same time revolting against various rules of music means that the end result seems less important than the process — and a new set of rules to deal with, one of which appears to be to never allow oneself to create a memorable song at the expense of an experience. That said, there are enjoyable enough highlights — the ending of “Mildew” gives a sense as to what would happen if that kind of sludge could come to life and rampage like King Kong, all sludgy noise and annoying tones, while the rhythmic squawks and squeals of “Brown” make it a good mood piece of sorts. Perhaps unsurprisingly, one of the other most notable moments is a digital beat fest called “Special Bonus Thing (Reprise),” so perhaps it’s all in the naming. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |

Hammerlock – Barefoot & Pregnant [4/15] $10.99 Hammerlock`s members have never been champions of political correctness — in fact, it`s safe to say that the trio`s risk-taking, totally infectious blend of alternative metal, punk, and country-fried Southern rock has been a rebellion against all things PC. And those who singer/guitarist Travis Kenney (lead vocals, guitar) and his wife Liza Kenney (bass, vocals) have offended in the past won`t be converted by Barefoot and Pregnant, which is Hammerlock`s first album for the Philadelphia-based Steel Cage label and third album overall. The hilarious front cover shows a picture of an obviously pregnant Liza baring her belly and pointing a rifle in the air while she stands near the kitchen sink — in other words, the Kenneys are going out of their way to thumb their noses at political correctness. But there is much more to Hammerlock than shock value. The hilarious front cover might grab one`s attention, but the excellence of the material is what keeps it. Those who appreciated Hammerlock`s two previous albums on Man`s Ruin will find that the Kenneys (who are joined by drummer Jamey Howell) haven`t lost any of their freshness; Hammerlock is still one of the most fresh-sounding bands in the alternative metal field. While other punk-minded alt-metal outfits are turning to hip-hop and industrial for inspiration, the Kenneys are inspired by Southern rock and country — and Travis Kenney proudly, defiantly flaunts his hell-raisin` shotgun-totin` good ol` boy image on raucous gems like "Colorado Mountain Goat" and "I Don`t Owe You Shit." This CD also contains inspired covers of three country classics: Ernest Tubb`s "Jealous Loving Heart," Charlie Daniels` "Long Haired Country Boy," and Waylon Jennings` "Good Hearted Woman," all of which lend themselves nicely to Hammerlock`s alt-metal/punk/Southern rock outlook. Heaven’s Pregnant Teens $13.98 To say that Some Girls’ Epitaph debut, Heaven’s Pregnant Teens, is a sonic assault from beginning to end is — well, obvious. What else was really expected from this frantic and vicious grindcore fivesome? The album is a lesson in stamina, and invites the question as to whether the band will outlast the listener or vice versa. With no regard for easing delicate ears into the harsh realms of the disc, the band comes out of the gate growling and never lets up — 13 tracks and 25 destructive minutes later, they are over and done. And considering that the last song is the album’s longest at nine minutes, it’s really no shock that most tracks hover around the one-minute mark. Fierce, gritty vocals shriek over layers of crashing drums and distorted guitars, producing a meandering musical atmosphere designed to taunt and brutalize the audience. The sometimes incomprehensible and seemingly nonsensical lyrics bubble over with dark, despairing, and often religious imagery, heard in lines like “And I am puking devil’s blood/Lord do you love me” from “You’ll Be Happier with Lower Standards.” Even surviving the irritating half-minute of feedback that opens “Bone Metal” does not completely prepare the listener for the next track, “Marry Mortuary,” which blasts in with enough intensity to rattle any unassuming brain. Arguably the calmest track on the record is a Public Image Ltd. cover, “Religion II,” but what the song lacks in spastic energy is made up for in sheer intensity. Those still breathing near the record’s end should watch out for the drawn-out closer, “Deathface,” whose use of echoing, repetitive vocals and taunting guitars produces a head-spinning, eerie funhouse ride for the eardrums, where demented beings jeer from the shadowy sides. Heed caution: Heaven’s Pregnant Teens will have fans of likeminded groups (e.g., the Locust) bowing down at the altar of Some Girls, while everyone else will be running to the exits. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi |
