Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. Clarice comes to Florence.?Carries the day against the Gonfaloniere. ?Filippo is permitted to return to Florence.?Enmity between Julius II. and Louis XII. of France.?Florence permits a schismatic Council to be held at Pisa, ? and is consequently put under interdict by the pope.?Conspiracy of Prinzivalle Stufa.? Public morality in Florence.?Magisterial corruption.?Revenge of Julius II. against Florence.?Sack of Prato.?Anecdotes.?Morality of History.?Gonfaloniere Sodermi abdicates.?Filippo Strozzi at Prato.?Politics of revolution in Florence. ? Interview between Filippo and the cardinal.?Restoration of the Medici and despotic government. Within a few months after the departure of Filippo for his place of exile, the excitement in the city which had been caused by his marriage had entirely ceased, and the family thought that they might venture to bring the bride to Florence. She had, it seems, remained at Rome instead of accompanying her husband to Naples, which appears strange; and can only be accounted for by supposing that Filippo had hoped at the time he proceeded to Naples that his wife would soon be able to show herself in Florence. The friends of the family suspected that the Gonfaloniere would, if he felt himself strong enough, forbid her to enter the city. They took care therefore to ascertain privately that a majority of the ' Priori' would not support him in such a step; and then wrote to the Cardinal de' Medici to send her. She came, accompanied by Giulio de'Medici and her brother Lorenzo, to a spot within the Sien- nese territory, where Lorenzo, Filippo's brother, with several other members of the family met her; and then, as Lorenzo says, ' after the fitting ceremonies,' whatever they may have been, the two Medici returned to Rome, while the Strozzi... |

Ribofunk (Di Filippo, Paul)
$17.98 Following the shock wave of cyberpunk writing in the late 1980s, Paul Di Filippo's first book, The Steampunk Trilogy, burst on the scene in 1995, leading SF veteran William Gibson to declare the young writer's work "spooky, haunting, hilarious." Cyberpunk concentrated on cold hardware. Di Filippo coined "ribofunk" by fusing "ribosome" (as in cellular biology) with "funk" (as in rock and roll). In the world of Ribofunk, biology is a cutting-edge science, where the Protein Police patrol for renegade gene splicers and part-human sea creatures live in Lake Superior, dealing with toxic spills. Ribofunk depicts a sentient river; a sultry bodyguard who happens to be part wolverine; a reluctant thrill seeker who climbs a skyscraper-and finds himself stuck; and a chain-smoking Peter Rabbit who leads his fellows in a bloody rebellion against-whom else?-Mr. McGregor. |

Filippo Strozzi and the Medici
$34.48 Filippo Strozzi (1489-1538), the Florentine aristocrat and banker, is usually remembered for the dramatic exploits at the end of his life. Forced into exile, he became an outspoken defender of the last Florentine Republic against the tyranny of the city's new dukes. His place in Florentine history, however, changes drastically when we focus not on his final years but on his extensive career as a Medici favourite and loyal financier. At the courts of the Medici popes he furthered the grandiose schemes of Leo X and Clement VII and accumulated a personal fortune of legendary size. Dr Bullard's study reassesses Strozzi's place in Renaissance history and considers the more general problems of paper economy and war finance, and Florentine political life, in the early sixteenth century. It documents the intricate financial ties between Florence and the papal court, and Strozzi's key role as a manipulator of the city's public funds to pay for papal wars. |

Fra Filippo Lippi
$129.29 Fra Filippo Lippi (c. 1406 -- 69) is one of the greatest artists of the early Renaissance in Italy. A pioneer of psychological realism, he developed unique and daring means of representation, discarding medieval traditions about the role of colour in painting. His intensely personal, richly expressive characters are a compelling revelation of Renaissance attitudes towards human experience.Jeffrey Ruda's work, first published in 1993, was the first full-scale study of Lippi to be published for many years, and provided an important reassessment of his life and work; it also attempted to define the nature of Lippi's greatness as a portrayer of the subtleties of human feeling, and to place his achievement in the wider context of early Renaissance art. Ruda's landmark survey -- still an invaluable work of reference -- is now being reissued in an abridged paperback format, so those who do not require the full art-historical analysis of the original catalogue section can enjoy its beautiful colour plates and fascinating narrative text at an amazingly competitive price. |

From Filippo Lippi To Piero Della Francesca
$56.01 In this fascinating book, Fra Carnevale--heretofore a mysterious, quasi-legendary figure--emerges as a well-defined and pivotal artist in Renaissance Florence. In presenting their case, the authors take the reader from the workshop of Filippo Lippi in Florence to Urbino, capital of Federico da Montefeltro''s duchy in the region of the Marches. It was a road most memorably traveled by Piero della Francesca, who worked in Florence in 1439 and became Federico''s favorite artist. This book shows that other lesser known artists like Fra Carnevale also took the same path. Among the many other artists--painters and sculptors--crucial to Fra Carnevale''s formation and discussed in this volume are Domenico Veneziano, Luca della Robbia, Pesellino, and Agostino di Duccio. Essays by Keith Christiansen, Andrea De Marchi, and Matteo Ceriana and a documentary appendix by Andrea Di Lorenzo and Matteo Mazzalupi transform our knowledge of this exciting moment in the history of Renaissance art. |

Il Teatro Di Eduardo de Filippo: La Crisi Della Famiglia Patriarcale
$70 Eduardo de Filippo (1900-1984) was one of the major dramaturgs of the 19th century. In his theater, the family represents the neuralgic point of society. The author analyzes de Filippo's comedies with a view towards the unstoppable breakup of the familiar universe and the patriarchal order in particular, whose rules are exposed as ever more anachronistic. Italian text. |

From Filippo Lippi to Piero della Francesca
$59.98 In this fascinating book, Fra Carnevale—heretofore a mysterious, quasi-legendary figure—emerges as a well-defined and pivotal artist in Renaissance Florence. In presenting their case, the authors take the reader from the workshop of Filippo Lippi in Florence to Urbino, capital of Federico da Montefeltro’s duchy in the region of the Marches. It was a road most memorably traveled by Piero della Francesca, who worked in Florence in 1439 and became Federico’s favorite artist. This book shows that other lesser known artists like Fra Carnevale also took the same path. Among the many other artists—painters and sculptors—crucial to Fra Carnevale’s formation and discussed in this volume are Domenico Veneziano, Luca della Robbia, Pesellino, and Agostino di Duccio. Essays by Keith Christiansen, Andrea De Marchi, and Matteo Ceriana and a documentary appendix by Andrea Di Lorenzo and Matteo Mazzalupi transform our knowledge of this exciting moment in the history of Renaissance art. |
