Silk $22.99 At his worst, Creed Taylor had a way of smothering a potentially great jazz album by producing it to death. But when he didn’t overproduce — when he gave musicians the right amount of guidance and direction yet let them have enough room to stretch out and improvise — Taylor created some real winners. One of them was Fuse One’s Silk, an all-star jazz-pop-funk project that boasted Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Tom Browne or Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Ronnie Foster on electric keyboards, Stanley Clarke on electric bass, Eric Gale or George Benson on electric guitar, Sammy Figueroa on percussion, and Leon “Ndugu” Chancler on drums. With Taylor doing the producing and Clarke serving as musical director, congenial pieces like Foster’s “Sunwalk” and Chancler’s “Silk” offer a healthy blend of jazz, R&B, and pop elements. It’s interesting to hear a 19-year-old Marsalis letting loose on Chancler’s Latin-flavored “Hot Fire” (which originally appeared on George Duke’s Reach for It album in 1977), and note how he sounded in 1981 — at that point, he wasn’t emulating Miles Davis and had a big, brassy sound along the lines of Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard. Considering how strident a jazz purist Marsalis would become, it’s surprising to hear him playing crossover. Not that Silk is “watered down” or anything like that. Though the material proved to be accessible to pop and R&B fans, it’s also quite creative and doesn’t toss jazz considerations to the wind. R. Kelly based a career on Silk`s greatest moment, "Freak Me," but the band`s albums could be patchy. The biggest problem is that Silk`s greatest moments were always about lust and sex, so the collection is a bit limited in topic, but if you have candles and essential oils in your bedroom you might as well have this. Best Of adequately covers their Elektra years, which was when things were really happening, so you don`t need to go much further. Despite having roots in the dated world of new jack swing, Best Of still sounds fresh and what their singles lacked in grabbing production they made up for with wonderful harmonies. "There`s a meeting in my bedroom/So girl please don`t be late" is a line few could deliver without sounding silly, but check the way the members interact on "Meeting in My Bedroom," and you`ll be a convert. The old remix of "Freak Me" gets tacked on to the end of the disc and makes the collection even more desirable. Except for Porter`s Southern jerker "Ain`t No Need of Crying," Silk members wrote all the tunes, including jewel-case gems "I Know I Didn`t Do You Wrong," which is sweet, gutty, and sincere, and "Let Him Go," which is lilting and passion-filled. Singer/multi-instrumentalist Aviram Cohen and keyboardist Peter Schuette come from jazzy indie rockers Soiled Mattress & the Springs, and while Ethan Swan`s Car Clutch is similarly strange and electronic, Silk Flowers is more focused and more mischievous. At different points on the album, the band`s dark-yet-na¿ve sound nods to Kraftwerk, Suicide, John Carpenter`s film scores, and library music, but that pedigree doesn`t let on how much fun this music is. Silk Flowers are as dark as any goth`s tears, but they`re laughing on the inside, and the way they switch from spooky to witty and back again makes this album hard to shake. Though native to this country the species in the form of various subspecies occurs widespread in a number of overseas countries. The local subspecies is called melanotus. The plumage is mainly indigo blue; the head and wings are black the latter with a greenish gloss. The feathers beneath the tail are white. When disturbed pukekos flick their tail and the white feathers become more prominent. This habit of tail flicking is common to all other rails. Bill legs and feet are scarlet and the eyes ruby red. There is no clear distinction in the general appearance of the sexes but males are slightly bigger than females. Ungraceful in becoming airborne pukekos are strong on the wing and are also swift runners. Though their large feet are not webbed pukekos are good swimmers. Their usual call is a piercing squawk. Their diet consists of the soft parts of aquatic vegetation grasses clover berries and seeds. Most of these are usually eaten parrot fashion by holding them up to the beak in one claw. Animals too are eaten and these may include insects worms fish (eels) and occasionally very young birds and birds’ eggs. Pukekos sometimes damage vegetable gardens crops and haystacks and these habits plus those of eating wild ducks’ eggs and their young make them unpopular with sportsmen and farmers. But more importantly, I didn’t want the book to be pegged as a lesbian novel, because it would immediately limit my audience. Why should any serious novel be relegated to the gay and lesbian section of Barnes and Noble because some of the characters are gay? Is To the Lighthouse filed in Women’s Studies? Invisible Man in African-American Studies? Mainstream publishers turned my agent and me down, most of them saying they liked the book but felt it had a limited audience. "Don’t become ghettoized." As if I’d had the choice. But actually this experience turned me around. I get a big kick from the idea of my friends, colleagues, and family having to trek over to the Gay and Lesbian Studies section to find the novel.
